What is a CO2 Data Logger?

A CO2 data logger is a device used to continously measure and record carbon dioxide levels in a cold chain environment over time. It works alongside temperature and humidity sensors to track conditions that affect the stability and safety of sensitive products like vaccines, biological samples, and pharmaceuticals.

CO2 monitoring becomes important specifically in controlled environments like CO2 incubators which are used to store cell cultures, tissue samples, and biological materials at precise concentrations. Even a small drift in CO2 levels inside these incubators can affect sample viability, so continous monitoring is critical for facilities like hospitals, biotech labs and pharmaceutical manufacturing units.

A CO2 data logger such as Cobalt X with its Triple Smart Sensor records CO2 concentration at set intervals along with temperature and humidity. This data gets stored in the device’s internal memory and is also transmitted wirelessly through the LoRaWAN or Bluetooth to a cloud platform like OCEAView. From there, your team can view real time CO2 readings, get instant alerts if levels go out of range and pull audit ready reports for compliance documentation.

Lisaline Asia is the authorised supplier of Dickson data loggers in India. As a part of their portfolio, the Cobalt X1 and X2 are CO2 data logger devices. These  need an external Smart Sensor for CO2 monitoring and do not have an inbuilt CO2 sensor. Alongside CO2 monitoring, these data loggers monitor other parameters like temperature, humidity, differential pressure, and other parameters like dry contact and light. These support four external sensors simultaneously, provide cloud  integration with the OCEAView platform and deliver instant alerts through SMS and email when conditions go outside set thresholds. Cobalt X- CO2 Data Logger supporting external smart sensor.

The Cobalt X data logger is built to support CO2 monitoring using Dickson’s Triple Smart Sensor technology. This is an external wired sensor, since Cobalt X does not have an inbuilt sensor for CO2 monitoring. The Triple Smart Sensor connects to the data logger through a wired connection and monitors temperature, humidity and CO2 together as a single combined sensor unit.

This setup is commonly used inside CO2 incubators, where the sensor sits inside the incubator chamber while the Cobalt X CO2 data logger stays outside, connected through a cable. Since the sensor needs to be placed directly inside the monitored environment, a wired connection gives you a stable and uninterrupted reading, without depending on wireless signal strength inside enclosed spaces like incubators.

Because all three parameters, temperature, humidity and CO2, are monitored through one sensor, you get a complete picture of the conditions inside your incubator or storage unit, rather than relying on separate devices for each parameter.

Once connected, the Triple Smart Sensor’s calibration data is stored directly on the sensor itself, not on the Cobalt X CO2 data logger. This means you can swap sensors when recalibration is due without having to reconfigure the entire logger, keeping your monitoring setup running with zero downtime.

* COâ‚‚ monitoring requires an external sensor. The Cobalt X has no built-in COâ‚‚ sensor. To monitor COâ‚‚, connect a Dickson Triple Smart-Sensor (sold separately) via the Binder connector. Once connected, COâ‚‚ data logs and transmits to OCEAView automatically alongside temperature and humidity.

Features and Benefits of CO2 Data Logger- Cobalt X

Dickson's Triple Smart Sensor Technology

For CO2 monitoring, Cobalt X uses a Triple Smart Sensor that measures CO2, temperature, and humidity together in one unit. This sensor is placed inside the incubator while the Cobalt X CO2 data logger stays outside, connected through a cable. Since Dickson uses Smart Sensor technology, where calibration data lives on the sensor, you can simply swap in a new calibrated sensor when needed. There is no manual setup required and no downtime for your monitoring.

Long Range LoRaWAN Based Data Transmission

LoRaWAN connectivity transmits readings over distances up to 15 km line-of-sight using a single receiver. That means one gateway can cover an entire facility, building, or multi-room campus, no dense network infrastructure, no per-room access points, and no IT complexity to maintain.

Glove Friendly LCD Display

The 2.4 inch color touchscreen on Cobalt X CO2 data logger is designed to work even when you are wearing lab gloves. Your team can set up monitoring points, check live readings, or acknowledge alarms without having to remove their gloves first.

OCEAView Integration or On Premises

Cobalt X CO2 data logger works with OCEAView, which you can use either as a cloud based platform or install on your own on premises server. This gives your IT and compliance teams the flexibility to choose the setup that fits your data requirements, while still managing everything from one dashboard.

Wired Sensors

Wired sensors connect directly to the Cobalt X via Binder connectors, giving you a stable, uninterrupted physical link even through access ports, door gaskets, or tight equipment openings. This makes it easy to monitor extreme or hard-to-reach environments like incubators, ULT freezers, nitrogen tanks. You do not need to worry about wireless interference or signal drop.

Supports Bluetooth Connectivity

Along with LoRaWAN, Cobalt X CO2 data logger also works with Bluetooth Low Energy for pairing with wireless sensors directly. This is a good option for smaller sites or single rooms where you do not need a full LoRaWAN gateway. Sensor readings can be collected in as little as 5 seconds with Bluetooth.

Audit Ready Compliance Reports

Every reading, alarm, and acknowledgment on Cobalt X CO2 data logger is automatically logged with a timestamp. This data is stored both on the device and in OCEAView, giving you a complete record you can pull up whenever you need it for compliance or quality audits. There is no manual logging involved.

Reliable CO2 Monitoring Without Gaps

Cobalt X CO2 data logger continuously tracks CO2 levels inside your incubator and alerts you the moment levels drift outside your set range. This is critical for incubators where even a small CO2 fluctuation can affect cell cultures or sample integrity. Since readings are logged constantly and backed up by battery power if the AC supply fails, you get uninterrupted CO2 monitoring and peace of mind that your samples are protected around the clock.

Why is CO2 Monitoring Important in Cold Chain Environments?

01

COâ‚‚ Affects the Stability of Pharmaceutical Products

Biologics, vaccines, and cell-based therapies are sensitive to atmospheric composition. Elevated COâ‚‚ alters the pH of liquid formulations and degrades sensitive compounds over time. Monitoring COâ‚‚ ensures storage conditions remain within validated parameters, not just temperature and humidity.

02

Dry Ice Use in Cold Chain Creates Unpredictable COâ‚‚ Surges

Cold chain shipments and storage areas frequently use dry ice for ultra-low temperature maintenance. As dry ice sublimates, it releases COâ‚‚ rapidly into enclosed spaces. Without monitoring, these surges go undetected and unrecorded, a risk to both staff safety and product integrity.

03

Regulatory Bodies Require Documented Environmental Monitoring

EU GMP Annex 1, WHO guidelines, and FDA cGMP mandate documented monitoring of all critical environmental parameters in pharmaceutical storage and manufacturing zones. COâ‚‚ is a critical parameter in many classified areas.

04

COâ‚‚ Incubators in Hospitals and Labs Need Precise, Continuous Monitoring

Cell cultures, tissue samples, and biological assays depend on a stable CO₂ atmosphere, typically 5%  inside incubators. Even a brief deviation affects cell viability and invalidates experiments or clinical samples. Manual checks cannot catch fluctuations between readings. Continuous monitoring with the Cobalt X and Triple Smart-Sensor ensures nothing is missed.

How does a CO2 data logger - Cobalt X work?

Connect the Sensor and Power On

Connect the CO2 Smart-Sensor to the Cobalt X data logger using the wired connection. Power it on via battery or the optional AC adapter. The color touchscreen is glove-friendly and shows battery status right away, letting you set up monitoring points within minutes.

Configure Monitoring Points

Set up CO2 thresholds, reading intervals and alarm limits directly through the OCEAView platform. Cobalt X CO2 data logger supports upto three high and three low alarm limits per measurement point, each with its own programmable delay. You can adjust these settings anytime from the touchscreen or the OCEAView app.

Continuous CO2 Monitoring Begins

Once configured, the Co2 data logger continuously measures CO2 concentration at your set interval. The Cobalt X CO2 data logger typically monitors a range of 0-5,000 ppm or 0-10,000 ppm depending on your sensor. You can run upto four sensors simultaneously if you are monitoring multiple zones like several incubators or storage rooms.

Data Transmits via LoRaWAN or Bluetooth

Readings are stored in onboard memory, holding up to 4,000 readings per measurement point, and transmitted wirelessly to the OCEAView server. LoRaWAN connectivity gives you long-range coverage, up to 15 km line-of-sight, ideal for facilities with multiple rooms or buildings.

View Live Data and Get Instant Alerts

Log in to OCEAView from any browser to view real-time CO2 readings, trends, and device status. If a reading crosses your set threshold, the device triggers flashing lights and an audible buzzer on-site, while OCEAView sends a notification, so your team can respond immediately.

Acknowledge Alarms and Maintain Audit Records

Alarms can be acknowledged directly on the device using a PIN code, creating accountability for who responded and when. All readings, alarms, and events are logged with timestamps in OCEAView, giving you a complete, exportable audit trail for compliance and quality reviews.
