What is a Light Data Logger?

A light data logger is an electronic device that features a light sensor that measures the ambient light exposure during cold chain shipments and storage. It logs how much light a shipment or storage area has been exposed to (and for how long), which helps detect if a package was opened, exposed to sunlight, or mishandled during transit or storage, useful for light-sensitive goods like pharmaceuticals or vaccines.

Lisaline Asia is the authorised supplier of light data logger models like Tempmate GM2, Tempmate GS2 and Cobalt X. Alongside temperature and humidity, these feature a light sensor for monitoring light exposure throughout storage and shipment.

Tempmate GM2 and GS2 also measure shock, tilt and location for multi-parameter shipment monitoring, with worldwide GSM connectivity and LTE 4G connectivity for real time monitoring from anywhere in the world.

Cobalt X monitors dry contact, pressure, CO2 along with temperature and humidity. It extends light monitoring to fixed storage locations like cold rooms, warehouses and labs, supporting up to 4 wired or wireless sensors with LoRaWAN and Bluetooth connectivity for real time cloud integration.

How does a Light Data Logger
Tempmate GS2 and GM2 Work?

Sensor Activation

The user starts the logger, which powers on the light sensor (along with temperature, humidity, shock, and tilt sensors) and pulls down the configuration from the cloud once a connection is established.

Periodic Sampling

The device measures light intensity at the configured interval (default every 10 minutes), capturing exposure data throughout transit. Each light reading is timestamped and stored in internal memory alongside temperature and humidity values.

Battery/ Power Management

The light data logger device runs on its internal battery throughout the journey, with the GS2's single-use battery designed to support continuous operation for up to 120 days, while the rechargeable GM2 can be topped up via mini-USB between uses without affecting its total runtime.

Cloud Upload

At the set upload interval (default every 240 minutes) the logger transmits data via GSM/4G to the tempmate-Cloud; if no connection is available, it stores data internally and uploads once reconnected.

Real Time Alerts

If light levels exceed the configured limits at any point, the system immediately sends alarm notifications through SMS or email, allowing those managing the shipment to respond quickly to a potential breach.

Cloud access and reporting:

Users can log into the tempmate-Cloud platform to view and evaluate the full exposure history, and download detailed PDF and CSV reports for record-keeping, quality assurance, or sharing with stakeholders.

Why does monitoring light exposure matter in cold chain and pharmaceutical storage and shipments?

Many drugs, especially biologics, vaccines, certain antibiotics, vitamins and hormone based products, contain molecules that are chemically unstable when exposed to light particularly UV and visible light in the blue-violet range. Exposure to light over prolonged periods can break chemical bonds, trigger oxidation or cause isomerization of the active pharmaceutical ingredient. This can reduce potency and cause degradation.

Unlike temperature excursions which sometimes produce visible signs like cloudiness, separation, freezing, light induced degradation frequently has no visible indicator. A vial or blister pack can look completely normal while the drug inside has lost significant potency. This makes monitoring essential, because without a logged record, there’s no way to know exposure occurred or to quantify how much.

Regulatory bodies such as the FDA, EMA, and WHO require that drug products be stored and transported according to the conditions validated during stability testing, which often specify “protect from light” on the label. Good Distribution Practice (GDP) guidelines extend this requirement through the entire supply chain, not just storage at the pharmacy or warehouse. If a shipment can’t demonstrate it stayed within validated light exposure limits, the batch may need to be quarantined, retested, or destroyed, which is costly and can cause supply shortages.

Cold chain shipments often involve packaging that’s opened and closed multiple times (customs inspections, transfers between vehicles, cold storage facility handoffs), each exposing the product to ambient light along with temperature fluctuations. Light and temperature stresses can compound each other, sometimes accelerating degradation reactions beyond what either factor would cause alone.

Monitoring light exposure is therefore a critical part of pharmaceutical and cold chain logistics, and a light data logger is the most reliable tool for the job. By creating a timestamped record of exactly when and how long a shipment was exposed to light, it allows investigators to pinpoint precisely where in the supply chain a breach occurred, whether that’s a poorly sealed container, an extended customs delay with packaging left open, or improper handling during warehouse storage. This level of traceability is invaluable not only for root-cause investigations but also for fairly assigning liability between carriers, distributors, and manufacturers when a shipment fails to meet quality standards.
